Lingotek customer FamilySearch, a nonprofit family history organization and the largest genealogy organization in the world, was using a Salesforce integration to translate its knowledge base content. Millions of people use FamilySearch records, resources, and services to research their family history.

Managing translations was a difficult and time-consuming job.
To describe the frustration, Rob Thomas, Senior Project Manager at FamilySearch, compared the process to doing laundry.

The integration required cutting and pasting translations back into Salesforce, one document at a time. It wasn’t built to meet the need for generating dynamic multilingual content for global consumers.

One-at-a-time translation was overwhelming

The amount of time spent managing translations was becoming overwhelming. The process required emailing single files. Translating a single article into nine languages, meant managing nine different files. They then had to cut and paste each document back into Salesforce. When FamilySearch needed 50 articles translated into nine languages, that meant managing 450 individual files. To describe the frustration, Rob Thomas, Senior Project Manager at FamilySearch, compared it to doing laundry.

The need for drop bundle translation

“We needed a service where we could drop the laundry off in a bundle and have it all washed, dried, and folded on an assembly line,” said Thomas. “The tools we were using were only designed to wash, dry, and fold one piece of laundry at a time.” They had to find a better way, so they reached out to Lingotek.

FamilySearch had been using Lingotek for nine years, and uses its workflow tools to manage a two-million word community translation project. “Lingotek was a friendly partner that helped solve problems that did not seem to have easy answers,” said Thomas.

FamilySearch is using Lingotek’s community translation platform to translate 150,000 total words a week into nine languages.
