TM Vaults are an intuitive way to manage, control, and store your TM files. Storing TMs in online TM Vaults allows translators access to TM hits in that vault, without forcing them to download a large TM file. In addition, translators can use one another's translations almost immediately, instead of working in isolation until a project has been completed.

Translation Memory Files

TM Vaults are a storage space for two different types of TM file:

  1. Uploaded TM files: TMX or XLIFF files. These are files that are created in other applications, and uploaded through the TM Vault page or the TM Uploader
  2. Documents in Lingotek: As translators work, their translations are converted into translation memory files and saved automatically.

Uploaded files can be found in the "Uploaded Translation Memory (TM) / Completed Documents" section of the TM Vault which they were uploaded into, while documents are stored in the "Documents" section.

TM Vault Types

There are 3 types of TM Vaults:

  1. Private TM Vaults - These are vaults created by you. When you open a Private TM vault, you will have the options to Share, Rename, or Download the vault.
  2. Shared TM Vaults - These are vaults that were created by someone else, but are shared with you. You can save TM files to a shared TM vault, but you cannot download the vault, rename it, share it with someone else, or see files saved to the vault by others.
  3. Open TM Vault - This is a vault that is shared with everyone using the Lingotek software. Confidential or sensitive TM should not be put into this vault.

Using TM Vaults on a Project

All 3 Vault types can be used with your translation projects. When you create a new project, you will be given two TM Vault-related options:

  • Save TM To - This is the vault that documents in your project will be saved to.
  • Searchable TM Vaults - This is a list of TM Vaults that will show up for your translators as they work on this project. To add a new vault to the project, select the vault name from the dropdown list. To remove a vault, click the red "X" to the right of the vault name.

Sharing TM Vaults

Sharing a TM vault allows other project managers to save TM files to your TM Vault, and to share it with their translators. To share a vault with another project manager:

  1. Add the person to your contacts list.
  2. Click the "Share" button for the TM Vault that you want to share.
  3. Choose the Project Manager that you want to share the vault with.

TM Vault Management Use Cases

Project Managers might separate TM into different TM Vaults for a few different reasons, including:

  1. Different levels of quality - new translations or new translators might save things to an "Unapproved" Vault, while reviewed, approved TM might go to a vault like "Approved" or "High-Quality".
  2. Different products/domains - you may want to store UI strings in a vault called "UI", and all FAQ documents in an "FAQ Vault".

Translators can see which vault a TM hit comes from, so if they see something like "Unapproved Vault", then they might be more cautious in using the TM.
