Getting Started
|
If you are logged into a translation community, then on the left-hand pane, under your profile picture, you will see a leaderboard. The leaderboard displays a score that includes the number of segments that you have translated, reviewed, voted on, and whether those segments were accepted. |
Dashboard Pagination
Once there are over 10 documents in any of the document sections, the documents will be paginated. You can choose to view 10, 25, 50 or 100 documents per page.
LingoDex
LingoDex is the Translator Platform - the primary resource for translating and reviewing content. LingoDex is launched when you click on a translation job from your dashboard to begin work.
Source Pane
Main Article: LingoDex Source Pane
The source pane, at the top left, displays the current segment that you are working on, surrounded by a few segments before and after, to give context.
Target Pane
Main Article: LingoDex Target Pane
The target pane, at the bottom left, is where you input your translation. The translation should only cover what is highlighted in the source pane. Click next in the source pane to select and begin working on the next sentence or segment in the target pane.
Resources
Main Article:LingoDex Resource Pane
The pane on the right-hand side is the Resources pane. This is where you will find resources to help you translate, like a machine translation of the current segment, similar translation memories, dictionary/terminology entries, and notes left by other translators.
You can drag and drop resources from the Resource Pane, or use Quick Keys to quickly navigate through and use resources.
Hits tabThis tab displays Machine Translation, Terminology, and Translation Memory hits for the current segment.
Machine TranslationAt the top of the Resources tab is a machine translation of the current segment (for available languages). Click Use (or Alt+g) to replace the current text in the target pane with the machine translation. You can then edit the machine translation until it is correct.
TerminologyIf the project manager has added a Terminology dictionary to the project, then you will see matching terminology results directly underneath the machine translation. These are important terms from the current segment, along with their translation. Clicking on the entry will paste it into your target pane.
Translation MemoriesTranslation Memory results are the next resource. Translation Memories are a record of how you and other translators have translated similar segments in the past. The TMs with the most matching phrases will show up at the top. You can paste the target section of TM into the target pane by clicking the result number or pressing Alt+[The search result number] (AppleKey+[The search result number] for Mac users). For example, if you find search result 3 particularly useful, you can paste the target from search result 3 into the Target pane by pressing Alt+3. If you only want to use a portion of a TM result, then highlight it with the mouse and moved it into the Target pane by dragging it, copying and pasting it, or clicking the Paste From Search button in the Target pane toolbar. Underneath each TM result is the Vault that it came from, followed by a rating for the TM. Only the first 10 TM results will be displayed. If there are additional TMs, then you will see the text "Load More Results" after the last TM result. Click the text to load the next 10 results.
Dictionary tabThe Dictionary tab searches private and public dictionaries for terms found in the current segment. Clicking a translation will paste the translation into the target pane. Click the Add new phrase link to add a new entry to one of the dictionaries. Enter the new phrase, select the dictionary or glossary you wish to add the term to, enter the meaning, and click Save. The entry will be added to the dictionary, and you should see it appearing in the results within 5 minutes.
| ||
Notes tabWhen the Notes tab is selected, you can create a note by clicking Add new note. Notes can be viewed by anyone else who has access to the document. Notes that you create will then be associated with the current translation segment, and will appear for every translator when they view the segment. For convenience, the note creator's name and email address are listed, as well as the date and time the note was created. The button at the top left will let you quickly go through all of the notes on that document.
Versions tabIn the Versions tab you can compare the differences between a segment in two specified phases, and accept the changes from the best version. Please note that this tab will not appear in the translation phase, because there are not two phases to compare. When the Versions tab is selected you can see differences by selecting a different versions in each pane. The red sections indicate text that was deleted from the earlier step, and the green sections indicate text that was added in the later step. Either version of the segment can be pasted it into the translation pane for the current step by pressing the "Accept" button next to that version. You can quickly jump to the next segment where there is a difference between the two versions by pressing the "Next Difference" button.
| ||
Find/Replace tabYou can search for specific text in either the source or target portions of a document. To use the Find feature click the Find/Replace tab in the Resources Pane. Enter a phrase to search for and select whether you would like to search the source or the target, and whether you want your search to be case sensitive. Find will find the next matching segment in the document. When a match is found, the phrase will be highlighted in blue. When no match is found, a "No match was found" message will appear. If the phrase is in the target, then you can enter text into the Replace With field to replace it. Replace/Find replaces the currently highlighted phrase and finds the next time it occurs. Replace simply replaces the currently highlighted phrase, while Replace All replaces all instances of the phrase in the document.
Formatting tabThis tab is used to apply formatting from the source document to the target document. When this tab is selected you can select formatting that existed in the source document, and apply it to the translation. For example, say our source segment contained some bold formatting. When the Formatting tab is selected, this bold formatting will be listed. Hovering over the listed format tag will highlight the portion of text in the source segment to which the formatting applies. You may select a formatting tag by clicking on it. This will again show the portion of text highlighted in the source segment. To apply the formatting to the translation, select the text in the target to which the formatting should apply. Next, after the appropriate text has been selected, press the Apply button. This will apply the formatting to the text you selected. The text should now appear highlighted, matching the highlighted text in the source. If formatting applied to a portion of text is incorrect, you may remove the formatting by selecting the tag, and then clicking Remove: NOTE: Because the translation process often involves changing a portion of translated text many times, we highly recommend that you apply Formatting as a FINAL STEP in the translation process.
Jobs tabHere you can switch between all of the documents assigned to you as well the ones in your community. Please note that all community documents are now loaded with LingoDex Beta.
Gadgets tabThis tab allows users to add OpenSocial gadgets to LingoDex for increased collaboration and productivity. Currently there is a Meebo chat gadget installed. |
Additional Resources
Document Viewer
LingoDex Beta offers a Full Document Viewer, which allows you to see both the source and target of the entire document that you are translating.
On the left is the source of the document. Items which are marked as non-translatable will be crossed out.
On the right is the target, as it would appear if it were downloaded. Segments that have not yet been translated are grayed out. You can click on a segment in either the source or target to open that segment in LingoDex.
LingoDex Popout
LingoDex can be popped out into three separate windows - a source window, target window, and resources window. These windows can then be resized and arranged the way that you like them.
Community Translation & Review
Documents that appear in the "Community Documents" box are documents that are not assigned to one specific translator, but can be worked on by anyone in the community. These documents can be one of two types - Self-Assigned or Community.
Self-Assigned Documents
Once a translator clicks Translate/Review on a Self-Assigned Document, that phase is assigned to them and is removed from the Community Documents list. If the translator doesn't do any work on the document for the alloted amount of time, then it is moved back to Community Documents. The alloted time is set by the community admin - the default is 2 days. Self-assigned jobs use the traditional LingoDex translation interface for review instead of the community documents interface.
