The technology powering translation is changing, allowing companies and individuals to produce high-quality, human-translated documents at a fraction of the cost of traditional translations.

The root of this new technology is Translation Memories, or TMs. These TMs are simply a record of how a translator has translated something in the past. TM tools then search past TMs to give suggestions for translating the current document. For example, if you translated "The sky is blue" as "Le ciel est bleu" in one document, then the next time you translate a document that has a sentence like "The sky is blue", "The sky is green", etc. the TM tool will remind you how you previously translated the similar phrase, allowing you to reuse that translation.

*Limitations of TM Tools

Under traditional TM tools translators are isolated from one another. Their TMs are created and stored on their computers, but can only be shared with other translators by manually sending groups of TMs via CD or email. As TM Vaults grow larger they become slower and slower to search because they are searched using the computer's processor.

*Bringing the Web to TM

Lingotek takes the idea of content reuse to a new level, combining Translation Memory technology with the power of the web to search and collaborate easier and faster. Instead of storing documents and TMs on individual computers, Lingotek stores them on a central server, making communication and collaboration seamless and instantaneous.

Lingotek connects translators, making translation a truly collaborative effort. As translators work, their TMs are all saved to the same TM Vault, and instantly become available to the other translators.
